Kidbrooke Place Retirement Village Unveils new Wellness Hub
Kidbrooke Place Retirement Village is proud to announce the opening of its new Wellness Hub, designed to provide care and support for residents requiring either frail or memory care, as well as being the nerve centre for the provision of home-based care throughout the Kidbrooke Community.
The new premises marks a significant milestone in Kidbrooke’s commitment to providing holistic, person-directed care for all residents, as the Wellness Hub will also provide services to independent-living residents, such as the clinic for primary health care. Also available is a treatment room, should a resident need a space to consult with a specialist medical service provider (e.g. a physiotherapist).
The Wellness Hub will officially open its doors on 30 May 2025, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by various stakeholders.
History
The Wellness Hub concept began with a revised care strategy in 2014 with more wide-ranging and focused research over the past 5 years. Kidbrooke’s trustees, management and care staff, together with a team of experienced industry experts, most notably Rob Jones, Karen Brockowich and Kestrel Studios (the architects), have ensured that all aspects of functionality have been addressed. Above all, the primary focus has centered around creating a homely environment for the residents who live there, with an emphasis on natural light and comfort (including temperature control, ergonomic design principles and appropriate furnishing).
The well-designed spaces provide wonderful support for our residents’ well-being, addressing their physical, emotional, and social health needs. The building is further enhanced by a therapeutic garden which will provide a safe and secure area for residents to wander through – and even potter in the raised garden beds.
In addition, the building has incorporated both solar power and a generator to ensure no electricity outages, as well as heat pump technology to reduce energy usage for water heating, and a conservancy tank to collect all rainwater for irrigation purposes.
Person-Directed Care Approach in Kidbrooke Place
The focus of our care service is to provide assistance with the activities of daily living, by following a person-directed care ethos.
Kidbrooke care staff go to great lengths to consult broadly and in a multi-disciplinary manner to achieve the best possible outcomes for all residents of the village (e.g. discussions with the personal physician and family of the resident concerned, as appropriate).
Our team members collaborate closely with each other to understand each resident’s complete health picture, allowing us to provide truly personalised care.

Nestled at the foot of the Kleinrivier Mountain Range, Kidbrooke Place was originally a protea farm owned by Norman and Doris Hudd. As a gift to the region and the town of Hermanus, the Hudds very generously bequeathed the 196 acres of magnificent land for the establishment of a retirement village. They also donated their striking homestead, to be converted and equipped into what became known as the original frail care centre.
Today Kidbrooke Place is a beautiful and full-service retirement village thanks in large part to the legacy of Norman and Doris. Their kind and caring spirits continue to shine in the cordial attitude of the people living and working in the village, all giving their time, knowledge and skills to help others and benefit the village as a whole.
